Eurotunnel

The Eurotunnel is an undersea rail tunnel that carries cars, freight and passengers between Folkestone, Kent in England with Coquelles, which is close to Calais in France. The Eurotunnel was constructed in earnest in 1988 under the English Channel at the Straight of Dover, though the Eurotunnel idea has been kicked around for years since 1802. Passenger service began in 1994.

The Eurotunnel or Chunnel consists of three tunnels. Two tunnels are used for transporting passengers and freight. There is a smaller tunnel that is used as an emergency escape route and is situated between the other two tunnels. At the peak of its creation, the Euro Tunnel employed over 13,000 workers. Engineers have dubbed the Euro Tunnel as one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World.

If your travel plans include a ride across the Eurotunnel, be sure to make your reservation well in advance. During peak travel times, if you do not have a reservation you may not get a ticket for the crossing and you may go away disappointed. Reservations can be made easily online and you will get an email confirmation of your booking.

It is not always possible to plan your precise arrival time for departure based upon your other flight and/or travel plans. If you arrive two hours before your scheduled departure time, you may be able to switch over to an earlier departure time depending on the type of ticket you have and if there is availability to do so. By the same token, if you miss your scheduled departure time between two and twenty-four hours, you may not have to forfeit your fare. You will only be charged the price difference between the fare that you previously paid and the price of a new ticket, provided the ticket you have allows this.

You may also save some money on your ticket if you are staying for a short period of time. If you plan on returning within five days of your departure date, you can buy your ticket as a return and save half of the regular fare.
